YALA NATIONAL PARK, one of Sri Lanka 's premier eco tourism destinations, lies 24km northeast of Tissamaharama and 290km from Colombo on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, spanning a vast 97,878 hectares over the Southern and Uva Provinces.

The History of Peradeniya Royal Botanical Park

The history of the park wouldn't take a backseat to its geography, terrain or vegetation. Conceived originally in 1371 as the Queen's pleasure garden, it was developed by King Kirti Sri Rajasinhe (1747-1778) where royal visitors were entertained. It was converted into Botanical Gardens in 1821, by the British during the deputy governorship of General Sir Edward Barnes, six years after fall of the last King of Sri Lanka.

How to get visa

beginning in 2012, Sri Lanka did away with its free visas, which had been issued on arrival. To nearly universal criticism, an online visa system was introduced. At time of research, this system was still being refined (e.g. after the number of people doing a short stopover plummeted, the visa fees were waived for certain 48-hour visits).

Miss France 2014 contestants in Sri Lanka

Thirty three contestants who qualified for the Miss France 2014 Finale along with reigning Miss France Marine Lorphelin who is also the first runner up in 2013 Miss World arrived in Sri Lanka today on a tour.

This is the first time  that final contestants of a Miss France contest visited Sri Lanka although they had visited countries like Thailand, Maldives, Mexico and Mauritius before.The winner of the Miss France 2013 would visit Sri Lanka again and would represent as a brand ambassador of Cinnamon Hotel and Resorts.Cinnamon Hotel and Resorts and Srilankan Airlines are providing facilities for the tour.

He rarely needs to be asked twice to show off his dancing skills, so there was no stopping the Prince of Wales when he walked into a classroom of children doing the Hokey-Cokey in Sri Lanka.

The Prince joined hands with children in a music class at a school for physically and mentally handicapped children in Nuwara Eliya, and went through several verses of the song before finally admitting defeat when the children appeared ready to carry on all afternoon.

Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meet business leaders and civil society in Sri Lanka

Nov 16, Colombo: Commonwealth Foreign Ministers met with business leaders and civil society representatives this morning in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The roundtable discussion, chaired by Sri Lanka's Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, is intended to deal at length on areas varying from cooperate opportunities to business infrastructure.
Foreign Ministers and representatives from all Commonwealth countries participating in Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2013 were present at the roundtable discussion.
The Commonwealth, often described as a family of nations, organizations and people, includes three Inter-government Organizations (IGOs), ten Associated Organizations (AOs) and 72 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
The 10 Associated Organizations include Commonwealth Association for Public Administrators and Managers (CAPAM), Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA), Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), Commonwealth Conference of Postal Administrators (CCPA, Conference of Commonwealth Meteorologists (CCM), The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Commonwealth Education Trust (CET), Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO).

Galle Face

Galle Face Green stretches from the foyer of the Galle Face Hotel, all the way to the old parliament building now used as the Presidential Secretariat, hugging the western coast of Colombo along the waters of the Indian Ocean.

CHOGM SRI LANKA

The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) will be one of the principal meeting venues for CHOGM 2013. It will also be the location of the Media Centre, which will be the central location for all media personnel accredited to cover CHOGM 2013. All accredited media professionals will have full access to all the facilities at the Media Centre.

Through the Media Centre, journalists will be able to have access to a fully-equipped facility with the latest technology for the duration of CHOGM 2013.

The main communications platform for CHOGM 2013 will be an Intranet platform. All accredited media will have access to the Intranet via the media work area.

EARLY morning on Kandalama Lake in central Sri Lanka and an elephant is sloshing through the shallows, while around him iridescent kingfishers plunge dart-like into the water.

This lake is an artificial creation, the origins of which date back perhaps 1000 years. Rising from the jungles in this relatively dry part of the country are the ruins of cities that were once wonders of the ancient world. Complex and extensive irrigation channels, reservoirs and water gardens were an integral part of these.

Galle

The seaside town of Galle is 116 Km. from Colombo by road or rail, down the south-west coast. Both routes are picturesque, following the coastline closely for much of the way.

Today's town has grown greatly and spreads into the hinterland but the Fort is the slow-beating heart of Galle's history. The walled city has stood since the early sixteenth century, through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British and in our present times is proclaimed as an Archaeological Reserve and been identified as a living World Heritage Site.

Chinese tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka on a steady rise

Chinese tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka is on a steady rise, as the country has received 16,582 tourists during the first six months of this year, compared to 9,622 visitors received during the same period of last year. This is a 72.3-pct year on year growth. The latest jump shows encouraging signs as the Government of Sri Lanka is campaigning vigorously to capture a slice out of the growing Chinese outbound tourism market, which during the year 2012 stood at 83 million tourists.

nagadeepa rajamaha viharaya

The Nagadeepa Purana Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the sixteen most sacred places of worship by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Pilgrims have been coming to the Nagadeepa since about the 1st century AC to worship at its famous Rajayathana stupa. The Rajayathana stupa was constructed by two warring Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, at the site where Lord Buddha during His second visit to the country on a Bak Maha Amawaka Poya Day, five years after attaining Enlightenment, intervened and mediated in settling a dispute over the possession of a gem-studded throne. The precious throne was offered to the lord Buddha, was returned to the Naga Kings and was later enshrined in this Rajayathana stupa.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's splendid medieval capital was established as the first city of the land in the 11th Century, A.D. It replaced Anuradhapura, plundered made desolate, and laid hopelessly bare to the invading armies from South India. Three Kings dominate the annals of the city and the period.

Ruwanwelisaya The Great Stupa

There are a few marvels in Sri Lanka that simply takes your breath away. It is not an exaggeration to name the Great Stupa of Anuradhapura, Ruwanwelisaya, as one such marvel.


Nestled in the midst of hundreds of ancient remnants that date back to the Before Common Era, the Great Stupa is truly an architectural wonder. It is believed that when one stands in front of the gigantic structure, one is not be able to hear even a faintest sound, even if a troop of drummers start playing on the opposite side.

Kandy Esala Perahera

The Kandy Perahera Procession hosted by the Sri Dalanda Maligawa; the Temple of Tooth Relic, is the most valuable cultural event of the country in which almost all the traditional performances and arts are showcased. This world famous Buddhist Festival event is held annually in the world heritage city of Kandy. 

This event commences during the month of August  and continues for almost ten days with all its splendor and rich with Kandyan traditional dances, dancers with elegant costumes, decorated elephants in their prolific garments etc.

Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty five acre coconut property on the Maha Oya river at Rambukkana. The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers. In most of these cases the mother had either died or been killed. In some instances the baby had fallen into a pit and in others the mother had fallen in and died. Initially this orphanage was at the Wilpattu National Park, then shifted to the tourist complex at Bentota and then to the Dehiwala Zoo.
