History of Peradeniya garden

The History of Peradeniya Royal Botanical Park

The history of the park wouldn't take a backseat to its geography, terrain or vegetation. Conceived originally in 1371 as the Queen's pleasure garden, it was developed by King Kirti Sri Rajasinhe (1747-1778) where royal visitors were entertained. It was converted into Botanical Gardens in 1821, by the British during the deputy governorship of General Sir Edward Barnes, six years after fall of the last King of Sri Lanka.

How to get visa

beginning in 2012, Sri Lanka did away with its free visas, which had been issued on arrival. To nearly universal criticism, an online visa system was introduced. At time of research, this system was still being refined (e.g. after the number of people doing a short stopover plummeted, the visa fees were waived for certain 48-hour visits).

Gall face

Galle Face

Galle Face Green stretches from the foyer of the Galle Face Hotel, all the way to the old parliament building now used as the Presidential Secretariat, hugging the western coast of Colombo along the waters of the Indian Ocean.
The green grassy promenade has been a place for families to gather and spend their leisure, flying kites, eating gram, playing cricket and soccer, or even simply jogging along to keep fit and slim. Evenings on the promenade are always choked to capacity with people and vendors, especially on weekends. The cool breeze wafting from the Indian Ocean and the open spaces that bring in so much light and laughter bring a sense of calm and relief to the weary heart and mind. Children frolic as if they were spending time in Disneyland. Lovers take shelter behind open umbrellas sharing their emotions in silence amidst a humdrum of noise and thunder. Its, surely, a place for all people.

Sri Lanka's tranquil Kandalama Lake as seen from the Heritance Kandalama hotel.

Sri Lanka's tranquil Kandalama Lake as seen from the Heritance Kandalama hotel. Jill Worrall |5th February 2012

EARLY morning on Kandalama Lake in central Sri Lanka and an elephant is sloshing through the shallows, while around him iridescent kingfishers plunge dart-like into the water.

This lake is an artificial creation, the origins of which date back perhaps 1000 years. Rising from the jungles in this relatively dry part of the country are the ruins of cities that were once wonders of the ancient world. Complex and extensive irrigation channels, reservoirs and water gardens were an integral part of these.

Galle to play for: Beaches, beauty and the best bananas on a tour of sleepy Sri Lanka

Probably the first thing that strikes you is the sheer richness of the vegetation. In rural areas, it is thrillingly green. There is hardly a bare patch of ground as fruit and flowers of every description, from mangoes to orchids, pineapples to tea roses, papayas to camellias, burst out of the rich soil.

British Airways has resumed flights to Sri Lanka after fifteen years, which is a golden opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful islands in the world, a lush landscape topped by densely wooded mountains and ringed by white sandy beaches.

Galle

The seaside town of Galle is 116 Km. from Colombo by road or rail, down the south-west coast. Both routes are picturesque, following the coastline closely for much of the way.

Today's town has grown greatly and spreads into the hinterland but the Fort is the slow-beating heart of Galle's history. The walled city has stood since the early sixteenth century, through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British and in our present times is proclaimed as an Archaeological Reserve and been identified as a living World Heritage Site.

nagadeepa rajamaha viharaya

The Nagadeepa Purana Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the sixteen most sacred places of worship by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Pilgrims have been coming to the Nagadeepa since about the 1st century AC to worship at its famous Rajayathana stupa. The Rajayathana stupa was constructed by two warring Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, at the site where Lord Buddha during His second visit to the country on a Bak Maha Amawaka Poya Day, five years after attaining Enlightenment, intervened and mediated in settling a dispute over the possession of a gem-studded throne. The precious throne was offered to the lord Buddha, was returned to the Naga Kings and was later enshrined in this Rajayathana stupa.

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty five acre coconut property on the Maha Oya river at Rambukkana. The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers. In most of these cases the mother had either died or been killed. In some instances the baby had fallen into a pit and in others the mother had fallen in and died. Kandy perehara

The festival of Perahera has attained a unique stature in the cultural milieu of the Sri Lankan society. This is very much evident from the fact that it has been celebrated in Sri Lankan soil from 300 AD.
The Kandy Perahera begins on the full moon Poya day on the Buddhist month of Esala. This is a festival that is common to both the Hindus and the Buddhists as it is connected to the process of invocation of the gods to bless the farmers with rain to cultivate their crops, good health and fertility.

Temple of the Tooth Relic or The Dalada Maligawa

Relics of the Lord Buddha is venerated by all Buddhists throughout the world and the relic at the Dalada Maligawa is the left Canine Tooth of the Lord Buddha which is one of the remains of the cremated body of the Lord Buddha after the Parinirvana. It is said to be removed by the Arahanth Kema, who is a pupil of the great Arahanth Sariputta and given to King Brahmadatta of Kalinga, India. For centuries it was venerated and homage was paid by the Buddhists of Kalinga. During the time of King Sirimeghavanna (301 - 328 AD ) of Anuradhapura, the Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka by Prince Dantha (son of the King of Udeni ) and Princess Hemamali ( daughter of King Guhasiva ). During a war waged to obtain the posession of the Relic tooth by the nephews of King Pandu against King Guhasiva, this was brought to Sri Lanka by Hemamali and Danta in the guise of Brahmins and the Tooth Relic was hidden and concealed in Princess Hemamali's hair.
